Roofing jobs generate a heavy, awkward mix of old tiles, slates, felt, battens and broken timbers that cannot just go in a general skip without some thought about weight. A standard concrete tile weighs around 4 kg, so even a modest re-roof over a semi-detached produces upwards of a tonne of material. We size the skip to match: most re-roofing jobs fit a 4 or 6-yard builders skip, though a large hip roof or double-extension project often fills an 8-yard. We set a weight limit of 1.5 tonnes on 4-yard loads and 2.5 tonnes on 6-yard loads, so if you are stripping a heavy concrete tile or natural slate roof, spread the load sensibly and let us know in advance. The one material we cannot take is asbestos cement sheeting, which was used on outbuildings, garages and flat roofs built before around 2000. If you suspect your old roof covering contains asbestos, stop and have it tested before breaking it up. Asbestos removal is tightly regulated and needs a licensed contractor. Bitumen-sealed flat roofing felt in small quantities is generally fine, but full bitumen drums or large quantities of tar-bound material are not accepted. Waste from loft conversions and internal strip-outs can go in the same skip as the roofing debris, provided you keep it to timber, old insulation, plasterboard off-cuts and general renovation rubble. Note that plasterboard should ideally be kept separate or at least kept to a small proportion of the load, as landfill tax rules apply differently to plasterboard waste and we may need to charge a surcharge for heavy plasterboard-mixed loads. We recycle tiles and concrete rubble into aggregate where possible through our licensed transfer station.

Roofing & Renovation Waste Skips, FAQs
Can I put asbestos roof sheets in the skip?
No. Asbestos cement sheets, corrugated asbestos roofing and any other asbestos-containing material cannot go into a skip under any circumstances. Disposing of asbestos incorrectly is a criminal offence. You need a licensed asbestos removal contractor to bag, label and dispose of the material at a licensed facility. If you are unsure whether your roof contains asbestos, have a sample tested by an accredited laboratory before any work starts.
What size skip do I need for a typical re-roof?
A standard re-roof on a three-bedroom semi usually fills a 4 to 6-yard skip. Concrete interlocking tiles are heavier than natural slates, so weight matters as much as volume. If you are stripping a large or steep roof, or adding loft conversion debris to the same load, go for a 6 or 8-yard. We can advise once you tell us the approximate roof area and tile type.
Do I need a permit if the skip goes on the road outside my house?
Yes. Any skip placed on a public highway needs a permit from the local council, which we apply for on your behalf. Valley Skip Hire is licensed by the Environment Agency and we handle the permit as part of the booking. Permit costs vary by council and we will confirm the fee when you book. If you can site the skip on a driveway or private land, no permit is needed and we can often turn the delivery around faster.
Can I mix roofing debris with plasterboard from a loft conversion?
Small amounts of plasterboard mixed into a general renovation load are usually fine, but large quantities are not. Plasterboard contains sulphate compounds that react with other organic waste in landfill and cannot go to a standard landfill in quantity. If your loft conversion produces a significant amount of plasterboard, let us know and we can arrange a separate plasterboard-only load or advise on the best approach to keep costs down.
