Construction and renovation sites produce heavy, mixed waste that a standard household skip will not handle safely. Our builders skips are rated for dense loads including bricks, concrete, hardcore, soil, timber and mixed site debris. A 4-yard skip holds roughly 40 to 50 rubble bags and suits a single-room strip-out or patio breakout. A 6-yard takes the equivalent of a small extension clearance, while an 8-yard covers larger groundworks or multi-room renovations. If you are filling a skip with heavy inert material such as concrete or hardcore, keep it to the lower third of the skip and do not mix in lighter waste, as overloaded skips cannot legally be collected. We cover a 30-mile radius from Faringdon SN7 7SS, which takes in the Vale of White Horse, Swindon, Oxford and surrounding villages. For sites in public roads across Oxfordshire and Wiltshire, a skip permit is required from the relevant council before the skip is placed. We handle permit applications on your behalf as part of the booking; lead time is typically 2 to 5 working days depending on the council. If your site has off-road space such as a driveway or yard, no permit is needed. Plasterboard must not be mixed with other waste because it produces hydrogen sulphide gas when it breaks down in landfill. We offer a separate plasterboard-only collection for this reason. Asbestos cement sheets, textured coatings and insulation boards must be removed by a licensed contractor before we attend; we cannot accept asbestos in any form. Trade accounts with monthly invoicing are available for contractors and site managers working across multiple jobs.

Builders & Construction Skip Hire, FAQs

Do I need a permit for a builders skip on a public road?

Yes. Any skip placed on a public highway in England requires a permit from the local council. In Oxfordshire and Wiltshire, permits cost between £30 and £60 and take 2 to 5 working days to process. We apply for the permit on your behalf when you book. If the skip sits entirely on private land such as a driveway, yard or site compound, no permit is needed.

How heavy can I fill a builders skip?

Our skips have a weight limit as well as a volume limit. For heavy material such as concrete, rubble or soil, a 4-yard skip should not exceed around 4 to 5 tonnes. A 6-yard is rated to around 7 tonnes. Loading dense material above the skip's fill line or beyond its weight limit means we cannot legally collect it, and we may charge a waiting fee while excess waste is removed. If you are clearing pure hardcore or concrete, a smaller skip filled to a lower level is safer and cheaper than overfilling a larger one.

Can I put plasterboard in a builders skip?

No. Plasterboard must be kept separate from all other waste. When plasterboard is buried in a mixed load at landfill, it reacts with organic matter and releases hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas. Environment Agency rules require it to be disposed of separately. We offer a dedicated plasterboard-only collection; ask when you book and we will arrange the right container.

What happens to the waste from a construction skip?

Mixed construction waste goes to a licensed transfer station where it is sorted. Timber is chipped and processed. Concrete, bricks and hardcore are crushed and graded into recycled aggregate, which is used in road sub-base and new construction. Metal is sent for smelting. The proportion that reaches landfill depends on how well the load is sorted at source; keeping materials separated where possible on site improves the recycling rate.
