Concrete is one of the heaviest materials you can put in a skip. A single cubic metre weighs roughly 2,400 kg, which means a 4-yard skip filled entirely with concrete comes close to 8 tonnes, well above the road-legal limit for most skip lorries. For that reason we price concrete and aggregate loads separately, we specify a maximum fill weight on every hire, and we size the skip down rather than up. A 4-yard or 6-yard skip is usually the right choice; for larger demolition volumes a grab lorry is faster and cheaper because it can take a bigger payload in one run. Clean, uncontaminated concrete, hardcore and crushed aggregate are classed as inert waste. That is good news for recycling rates: we send this material to a licensed aggregate recycling facility where it is crushed and graded into recycled aggregate used in road sub-base and new construction. To keep loads recyclable, keep your skip free from soil with heavy clay or organic content, tarmac with tar contamination, plasterboard, and general mixed rubbish. Mixed loads get charged at a higher gate rate at the facility and some are turned away. Reinforced concrete with exposed rebar is accepted in smaller volumes, but projecting steel can damage the skip and the lorry, so cut rebar flush where possible before loading. We cover a 30-mile radius from Faringdon SN7 7SS, including Swindon, Abingdon, Wantage, Witney and Cirencester. Same-day or next-day delivery is usually available; call to confirm before booking if timing is critical.

Concrete & Aggregate Removal, FAQs

How full can I fill a skip with concrete or rubble?

Fill to the top of the sides but not above them. More importantly, weight matters more than volume with dense materials. We set a maximum payload on every skip, typically around 1.5 to 2 tonnes for a 4-yard and up to 3 tonnes for a 6-yard on a concrete-only hire. If you are unsure, tell us roughly how much concrete you have in tonnes or cubic metres when you book and we will advise the right size and confirm the weight limit in writing.

Do I need a permit to put a concrete skip on the road outside my house?

Yes, if the skip sits on a public highway you need a skip permit from the local council. We apply for this on your behalf as part of the booking; the fee varies by council and is added to your order. If you have a driveway or private land to put the skip on, no permit is needed. We cover councils across Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and the Cotswolds, so just let us know your postcode and whether it is road or driveway.

Can I mix concrete with other waste such as soil or tiles?

You can mix concrete with other inert materials like bricks, tiles, hardcore and clean stone. What you should avoid is mixing it with soil that has a high organic or clay content, any tarmac that looks black and oily, plasterboard, wood, or general rubbish. Mixed or contaminated loads cannot go to the aggregate recycling facility and incur a higher disposal charge. If you have both inert and mixed waste, it is often cheaper to hire two smaller skips rather than one large one.

Is a grab lorry better than a skip for large amounts of concrete?

For most jobs generating more than about 5 or 6 tonnes of concrete or hardcore, yes. A grab lorry can carry 10 to 14 tonnes in a single run, loads directly from a heap with a hydraulic arm, and does not need a permit because it does not sit on the road. It is faster to turn around on busy sites and works well where access is tight. The trade-off is that you need enough space for the lorry to reach the material, and it is not suited to loading from inside a building. If you describe the job to us we can tell you which option works out cheaper.
